One unit in a building facing the street in Amerikamura, Osaka. For the eel restaurant Unagi no Nakasho Osaka Amerikamura, we stripped the existing fit-out back part of the way and rebuilt the interior. The unit held a steel-framed mezzanine, which we kept and put back to use; there is seating up there too. What stays with us most is the kitchen area. The toilet had originally been built right alongside the kitchen, and when we took it out in order to move it, we found that the waterproofing of the toilet and of the kitchen ran as one. The membrane broke at the boundary, so we laid new waterproofing over the existing kitchen floor and raised the screed on top of it. Before work began we also found that the available electrical capacity was short. That was settled before we started, but because redoing the kitchen floor came up later, the schedule slipped back by two to three weeks. When you build inside an existing building, some things only come to light once it is opened up. Taking on what turns up and still seeing the job through is, to us, what renovation work is.
